Voices for Vaccines

In poorer countries, where challenges loom large and resources are scarce, vaccines are not just tools of prevention; they are pathways to survival, dignity, and a better future. They represent the belief that every life is worth protecting. Vaccines hold the power to break the chains of disease, to bridge the gaps of inequality, and to sow the seeds of a healthier, more equitable world for all.

In the late 1990s, the progress of international immunisation programs was stalling. Nearly 30 million children in developing countries were not fully immunised against deadly diseases, and many others went without any immunisation at all.

Responding to this crisis, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and a group of founding partners brought to life a solution to encourage manufacturers to lower vaccine prices for the poorest countries in return for long-term, high-volume, and predictable demand from those countries. In 2000, that breakthrough idea became the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation – today Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.

On June 20 2024, the Government of France, the African Union, and Gavi gathered leaders from government, partner organisations, civil society, and businesses across the globe to accelerate sustainable immunisation and innovation for equitable health by 2030. The event made the case for donor countries, including Australia, to invest in a new era of immunisation with the launch of Gavi’s investment opportunity for 2026-2030.

Gavi’s 2026–2030 plan is ambitious and provides a unique opportunity to significantly accelerate impact in the fight against diseases of poverty. By improving access to existing vaccines like rotavirus, measles and human papillomavirus (HPV), while introducing new vaccines against deadly diseases like malaria, dengue and tuberculosis, Gavi can reach the next billion children in half the time.

To this end, Results has launched our ‘Voices for Vaccines’ campaign. Over the next six months our advocates and passionate staff will be working alongside our colleagues at Pacific Friends of Global Health in spearheading advocacy for Gavi. We’ll be highlighting the impact of Gavi, meeting with MPs, injecting our voices into the media, and so much more.
