Bonn, Germany, Friday 12 June 2026 — Results Australia is proud to be one of 94 civil society organisations from Australia and Türkiye that have signed a joint letter calling on the COP31 Presidency to put the transition away from fossil fuels at the centre of the COP31 agenda.

Released at the Bonn Climate Change Conference, the statement urges Australia and Türkiye to use their leadership of COP31 to drive ambitious climate action, advance a just and equitable transition away from fossil fuels, strengthen climate finance, and ensure the voices of communities most affected by climate change are heard throughout the negotiations.

The statement, addressed to Minister Murat Kurum (Türkiye) and Minister Chris Bowen (Australia), emphasises that close cooperation between Türkiye and Australia presents a historic opportunity to make international progress in the transition away from fossil fuels, while also demonstrating leadership through domestic action.

By combining the diplomatic reach of both host nations with the long-standing climate leadership of the Pacific, the signatories argue that COP31 should champion the action required to limit warming to 1.5°C.

The statement calls on the COP31 Presidency to:

  • Commit to and advance a just, orderly and equitable transition away from fossil fuels.

  • Turn the Just Transition Mechanism, agreed at COP30, into concrete action through defined funding, clear timelines and practical implementation that protects workers and vulnerable communities.

  • Enable meaningful progress on international climate finance across mitigation, adaptation, and loss and damage, ensuring that major polluters contribute their fair share.

  • Rebuild trust in the multilateral process by acting as an honest broker, protecting negotiations from fossil fuel industry influence and ensuring the meaningful participation of civil society, Indigenous Peoples, women, youth and local communities.

The letter also calls on Australia and Türkiye to lead by example by developing national roadmaps to transition away from fossil fuels and taking bold domestic action ahead of COP31 negotiations in Antalya later this year.

Climate Action Network Australia CEO Denise Cauchi said the fossil fuel era is drawing to a close and that Australia and Türkiye have a unique opportunity to help deliver the ambitious action needed to keep 1.5°C within reach.

Greenpeace Australia Pacific Head of Pacific Shiva Gounden highlighted the Pacific's long history of climate leadership, noting that for Pacific communities, phasing out fossil fuels and holding the line on 1.5°C is fundamentally about survival.

As an organisation committed to creating a safer, fairer and more sustainable world, Results Australia was pleased to join this collective call for ambitious climate action and leadership ahead of COP31.
