I applaud the wonderful show of bipartisan humanitarian support for the work of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria, by 135 Federal Parliamentarians, including 14 Tasmanians, who signed personal letter of support to Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop for Australia to again commit funding to the Global Fund at its Replenishment Conference in Montreal today.
The Global Fund is seeking US$13billion from its global partners for 2017-2019 as part of a Sustainable Development Goal No 3 to end the epidemics of HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria by 2030.
Over the next three years its work is expected to avert 300 million new infections and save 8 million lives. The long term economic benefit is estimated at $290 billion.
