The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) is seeking to eradicate polio globally. To achieve its goal, it is seeking a total of $US 4.2 billion over five years to prevent new cases of polio arising in countries where the disease still exists and also to prevent the re-emergence of polio in countries where the disease has already been eliminated. The requested funding has been outlined in an ‘Investment Case’ released recently in the lead-up to the ‘pledging moment’ in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday November 19, 2019.

The funding for the GPEI is likely to come from a range of partners including national aid donors, multilateral agencies, the private sector and philanthropic partners. The funding is suggested to produce large benefits to communities in the future, with savings of $14 billion in the global health system, once polio is eradicated and no longer needs to be treated.

In the lead-up to the polio pledging event in Abu Dhabi in November 2019, RESULTS Australia invites the ‘One Last Push’ champions and MPs to support Australia being represented at the event and announcing a further financial contribution to finishing the task of polio eradication.
