TB: a neglected disease taking its toll

23/03/2015 @ 11:30 am - 12:00 pm

World TB Day is March 24.

This is a unique opportunity for you to hear first-hand about the devastating impact tuberculosis (TB) still has in the Asia-Pacific region.

56% of new TB cases occur in the South-East Asia and Western Pacific regions. Cases of multi-drug resistant TB are on a rapid rise because the disease is not being properly diagnosed or treated.

Introduced by Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch, grassroots anti-poverty organisation RESULTS Australia and leading research group Policy Cures are presenting the following speakers:

Eloisa ‘Louie’ Zepeda , Multi-drug resistant TB survivor from the Philippines

Louie was 25 years old and working as an architect in Manila when she contracted multi-drug resistant tuberculosis meningitis. After many months of gruelling treatment she was cured, but the toxic treatment left her blind. Today Louie is working, married, a mother and a passionate advocate for TB patients.

Ulzii Gurjav – TB researcher from Mongolia

Ulzii is a PhD student at the University of Sydney, where she is conducting research into TB transmission in the Asia-Pacific region. Ulzii previously worked as a lecturer at the Health Sciences University of Mongolia, which is one of the Western Pacific region high TB burden countries. Ulzii has first-hand experience of the challenges the country faces in diagnosis of the disease

Dr Mary Moran, Executive Director, Policy Cures

Mary has over 20 years experience in health policy and practice. Her focus in the last ten years has been on policy solutions for emerging issues related to neglected disease. Mary worked for over a decade in emergency medicine, and has held numerous positions in the global health sector, for instance as director and policy advocate with Médecins Sans Frontières . Maree has been the CEO of RESULTS Australia for the last six years.

The speakers will share their personal experiences of TB and are available for follow up interviews after the briefing.
