Charity does not end at home

Is this who we are now (“Australia is richer but meaner than ever”, April 4)?

The OECD review published last week scolded Australia for not matching its keen engagement on the global stage with appropriate levels of aid. Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop has delivered some good initiatives but funding them has been often limited and history will remember her as allowing Australian aid to drop to the lowest level ever.

A further cut to aid in this year’s budget will negate last year’s commitment for aid to at least keep pace with inflation for the next two years.

It’s time both major parties took a bipartisan approach to rebuild the aid program. We will all benefit.
