Major results in microfinance

  • In 2010 Australia released its first-ever aid strategy on microfinance: Financial Services for the Poor: A Financial Strategy for the Australian aid program 2010-15.
    RESULTS volunteers advocated strongly for such a strategy for several years, to which RESULTS also provided input in several important stages of its creation.

  • 100 million of the world’s poorest people were reached with lifesaving micro-credit loans in 2009! The Microcredit Summit Campaign is a project of RESULTS Educational Fund in the US and is supported by RESULTS affiliates around the world, including RESULTS International (Australia). It was launched in 2005 with the goal of reaching 100 million people with microcredit loans – a goal which was realised in 2009.

  • For years RESULTS has strongly made it known to the Australian public the importance of microfinance, and as a consequence Australian Government funding for the scheme has risen to a record high of $18 million in 2009-10 from just a mere $250,000 in 1990-91.

Major results in tuberculosis

  • In 2010 RESULTS worked extensively with other NGO partners, The Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis & Malaria, and the Australian Government to assign the Debt2Health finance initiative, which resulted in a significant cancellation of Indonesian debt owed to Australia ($75 million), and provided a further $35 million for lifesaving TB programs.

  • Since WHO’s announcement in 2010 of a new and novel rapid test for TB called Xpert MTB/RIF, RESULTS has continually pushed for its use in Australia’s local region, especially in Indonesia, which it is now receiving the benefits of.

  • Created awareness about the plight of TB in the developing world RESULTS hosted a groundbreaking exhibition in Canberra in 2008: The Shack & Dialogues – Understanding Tuberculosis. The Shack, which set up on Capital Hill, outside Parliament House, generated huge public interest and was visited by countless parliamentarians.

Major results in child health

  • In 2011 RESULTS lobbied tirelessly to help cement Australia’s global leadership in child health by securing a contribution of $200 million over three years to support the lifesaving work of the Global Alliance for Vaccines & Immunisations (GAVI) Alliance. As a result over seven million vulnerable children will receive lifesaving vaccines.

Major results in our local communities

  • Host Stand Up Against Poverty events in schools, workplaces, and homes as part of a global day of action on October 17 every year.
  • Hosted the Hobart Schools Microcredit Conference in Tasmania, which enabled students to learn more about poverty issues and how they could take action.
  • Created the Melbourne Hills Schools End Poverty Card Competition, whereby primary school students created artworks on the theme of ending poverty.

Major results in the media

  • In 2011 RESULTS advocates have already published hundreds of letters-to-the-editors in local and major newspapers across Australia. These include over 10 articles, radio interviews and TV appearances, such as The Clarke’s Living Below the Line Challenge on Channel 10’s current affairs program George Negus at 6.30.
