Four reasons why we heart volunteers – International Volunteers Day

Gina Olivieri

December 5 is International Volunteer Day, so I thought it would be a great chance to share exactly why we love our volunteer RESULTS Advocates so much…

Reason 1: They make change happen!

This year, Australia committed $220 million to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria, an increase on our last pledge that was largely attributed to the efforts of our amazing advocates. From meeting with MPs at electoral forums to getting 3 Senators to co-sign an opinion piece, our wonderful groups of passionate, committed people were kept busy ensuring this pledge would happen, and that about 100,000 lives would be saved as a result. Not bad for a year’s effort!

Reason 2: They go outside their comfort zones!

We ask a lot of our advocates, and sometimes what we ask them to do can be scary, like meeting face to face with a politician. It can be confronting to realise that, yes, you are now in fact an activist. But despite knocking knees, trembling hands, sweaty brows and churning stomachs they put themselves in front of the people who make the big decisions, and what’s more, they get them to listen. For your courage, we salute you!

Reason 3: They’re just so darn nice!

Seriously though. Have you met them? They are the loveliest, warmest, smartest and most fun people. Do yourself a favour; make friends with a RESULTS Advocate today. Or better yet, join a group!

Reason 4: We couldn’t exist without them!

Here at RESULTS we are able to do what we do – build the political will to end poverty – because of the generous support of our community. Without awesome people volunteering their time to run groups, meet MPs, and write letters, we wouldn’t exist. Not to mention the incredible support we receive from people who fundraise for us, whether it’s by running through mud, walking in a fun run, or hosting a quiz night. Without the support of our fundraisers and donors, we wouldn’t exist. So we love our volunteers a whole lot for keeping us going for the past 30 years.

The theme for this year’s International Volunteer Day is “#GlobalApplause: Give volunteers a hand” – we reckon our RESULTS advocates deserve a standing ovation. Bravo!
