Grassroots Advocacy News April 2015

Best (looking) bunch of advocates in town

Delegation to Parliament House, Canberra
Thank you and congratulations to volunteers Lindsey, Marley, Mark, Josh, Nicole, Emily, Tom, and Bruce for joining RESULTS staff in Canberra for meetings with 30 MPs and Senators over 2 days, March 16 and 17. For 3 of our volunteers it was their first time meeting with an MP! The biggest grassroots delegation we’ve taken to Canberra in a long time, our team performed brilliantly and produced some incredible results, including speeches in parliament, op-eds, and promises to act on issues of poverty in future.

Here are some photos from the delegation

Fact & Action Call with Peter Singer
On March 29 renowned ethicist and author Peter Singer joined us for our monthly Fact & Action Call. It was a memorable call – if you missed it you can listen to it here. Peter spoke about effective altruism, and the responsibility we all have to give what we can to effective organisations. If you feel inspired to give to RESULTS then you can sign up to be a donor.

Letter to the Editor Workshop May 12
Writing excellent letters to the editor is a key skill for RESULTS advocates, and big moments like the May federal budget provide an ideal opportunity to get published. On May 12, the night after the budget is announced, we will be running a special letter writing workshop. The aim is to help you, our awesome advocates, respond to media about the budget and keep proposed cuts to Australian aid in the spotlight.

When: Tuesday May 12, 8:00pm – 9:00pm AEST.
Where: Join from home by phoning the usual teleconference line, using Conference ID 707690#
Bring: A copy of the day’s newspaper (online or print) and your laptop or pen/paper.

Our progress so far…
This year we aim to have 30 meetings with parliamentarians in their electorates, 70 letters to the editor published, and 4 op-eds and articles published. So far we have had 4 meetings in electorates, and 18 letters to the editor published, with our grassroots groups working hard to have their op-eds published for this month’s action.
