25 Years of Economic Growth and Australia Still Cuts Aid

Letter to the Editor РSydney Morning Herald September 9, 2016

I was staggered to hear that we have had 25 years of economic growth and no other developed country can make the same claim. So why have we become so stingy with our Australian aid recently? Aid has constantly been reduced over the past four years. We are now giving the smallest amount in Australia’s history when compared against our gross national income; only 0.22 per cent. Ross Gittins says we should win gold for our economic management.

When it comes to giving to the most needy and our poorest neighbours we are barely in the race, we are right at the back of the pack. I would love to see our country improve in this event. Our neighbouring countries need to see Australia improve.
